No More Creepy Crawlies in Your Pakistani Home

Many people struggle with mosquitoes, geckos, cockroaches, and other insects that are considered “common” in Pakistani homes. What they often don’t realise is that simple, affordable solutions exist to keep your living space virtually insect-free. Whether you’re renting or building your own home, the following tips are essential for Wapistanis living in Pakistan.

  1. Seal Your Doors Completely Weather-strip all doors so they seal tightly on every side. If you’re building a house, ensure there’s no gap beneath the door once it’s hung. This can be achieved through various techniques, including adding a small raised lip on the floor to make contact with the door’s bottom edge. Even minor gaps under external-facing doors should be blocked.
  2. Secure Your Windows Use rubber weather stripping to ensure windows shut tightly and eliminate any gaps between panes. If you’re constructing your own home, opt for double-glazed windows that open and close (rather than sliding ones). If sliding windows are unavoidable, make sure they close without gaps or seal them with rubber strips.
  3. Install a Mesh Barrier at the Entrance Hang a magnetically sealing net over your front door, or install a secondary mesh door to prevent flying insects from entering.
  4. Check Under Every Sink Ensure there’s a P-trap installed beneath each sink, and that all drainage pipe connections are fully sealed.
  5. Protect Floor Drains Fit your floor drainage outlets with a non-reverse flow flap (like Atif’s design) or cover them with a fine metal mesh to block insect entry.
  6. Screen Every Opening Inspect your entire home to confirm that every window has an insect screen when opened. Seal or control every hole leading outside, including gaps around window frames.
  7. Fortify Your Extractor Fans Against Insects To prevent insects from entering through ventilation points, install a fine metal insect mesh on the exterior of all extractor fans. Additionally, seal the edges of each fan unit with silicone to eliminate any gaps around the perimeter. This ensures that pests can’t sneak in through or around the fan housing—keeping your home secure and bug-free.
  8. Maintain Cleanliness Avoid leaving food debris around. A neat, tidy, and clean environment is key to keeping pests away.

By following these steps, many of our members have lived in Pakistan for years without encountering geckos or insect infestations. These measures offer comfort and peace of mind at minimal cost. Just as people in the West deal with rats, mice, flies, and silverfish—Pakistan has its own challenges, but the solutions here are often simpler and more effective.
